Several organizations, schools, and universities have hired us to help them "begin the conversation" about cultural proficiency, equity, and multicultural education. These are organizations who may sponsor some early level "diversity" activities such as cultural fairs, but who need help framing a more forward-thinking vision of cultural proficiency and equity. In these workshops and consultations, we introduce concepts such as the complexity of cultural proficiency and community development for equity and social justice (as opposed to a sole focus on human relations). Participants are engaged in exercises and dialogues to develop a deeper understanding of their own world views and how these impact their work and relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and others.

Our consultants offer the benefits of years of experience gained in the field of cultural proficiency. RCS interprets Human Rights Education and Cultural Proficiency training and initiatives through the schema of the Continuum of Change--- Awareness, Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors (the principles of the continuum can be applied to changes at the individual, organizational or systemic levels).

The Awareness and Knowledge stages are focused on developing a readiness for positive change, whereas the Attitudes and Behavior stages are geared toward developing skills and strategies that translate the understanding gained in the first two stages into action. The Attitudinal and Behavioral stages also require support in order to increase and sustain positive change.

RCS’s training programs always include 4 basic components:

  • Awareness: of learned prejudices and fears about differences and how these impact organizational culture and professional and personal relationships
  • Knowledge: creating a critical, deeper understanding of the issues of race, discrimination, equity and inclusion
  • Attitudes: developing the necessary skills that integrates newfound and existing values and knowledge into the organization's mission and vision
  • Actions/Behavior: to develop plans to implement the new knowledge, awareness and skills, on both the individual and organizational levels
